Teen Murder Suspect Arrested After Being Seen at Three Raleigh High Schools

A teenage murder suspect was arrested in Raleigh on Friday.

Syncere Pigford, who has an outstanding secure custody order for murder, was apprehended around noon near the intersection of North King Charles Road and Tudor Place. He was spotted at three Raleigh high schools—Broughton, Enloe, and Athens Drive—over the past two days.

Raleigh police and Wake County deputies collaborated in Pigford's arrest. Although Pigford's exact age has not been disclosed, authorities have identified him as a juvenile. He is wanted in connection with the June 30 shooting death of 24-year-old Serenity Spencer near Wendell.

The Wake County Public Schools System sent an email to parents on Friday morning, informing them of additional security measures. The email noted that administrators at the three high schools had promptly identified and removed Pigford from campus as a trespasser. At that time, they were unaware of his involvement in a homicide investigation.

Xavier Don 'Ameche Atkinson, 19, and Kahlil Hahson Atkinson, 18, both charged with first-degree murder in Spencer's death, are being held without bond. The Atkinson brothers made a court appearance on Wednesday. Additionally, a juvenile petition was filed for a third suspect in the case.

Spencer's sister told WRAL News that Serenity did not know the suspects and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin expressed relief over the arrest, stating, "We are relieved that this person is in custody, and we are proud to have assisted the Wake County Sheriff's Office in this search. Like many parents, school staff, students, and community members, I am breathing a sigh of relief that we had a peaceful resolution. I would also like to thank the Wake County Public Schools System for its partnership in keeping the community safe."

Meanwhile, as authorities were searching for Pigford, WRAL's Sky 5 camera captured another young man being taken into custody at the same location. Police have not released details about this individual, as he is under 18, nor have they specified any charges he may face.
