The Latest: Presidential Campaigns Accelerate as Election Day Approaches

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are sharpening their strategies as they enter the final two-month sprint to Election Day.

The Democratic vice president and the Republican former president are focusing their campaigns on just seven key states, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into targeting voters who are only now beginning to engage with the election. Their campaigns will center on three major issues—economy, immigration, and abortion—even as debates over character, culture, and democracy continue to heat up.

The candidates will face off in their first-ever debate next week, and Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state, will start in-person absentee voting the following week. By the end of September, early voting will begin in at least four states, with a dozen more to follow by mid-October.

With only 63 days until the final votes are cast, Harris and Trump are neck-and-neck in most national polls since President Joe Biden exited the race.

**Here’s the Latest:**

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is allocating nearly $25 million to support down-ballot Democrats, marking the largest-ever transfer from a national campaign and the Democratic National Committee to state and congressional races. The funds will be split among various Democratic committees: $10 million each for the House and Senate campaign arms, $2.5 million for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, and $1 million each for the Democratic Attorneys General Association and Democratic Governors Association. This move reflects both Harris’ strong financial position following her selection to replace Biden and a favorable shift in the political landscape for Democrats.

“The Vice President believes this race is about mobilizing the entire country across all levels to fight for our freedoms and economic opportunities,” said Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon. “That’s why the Vice President is investing a historic sum into electing Democrats at every level: because Democrats win when we fight together.”

In addition, Harris’ campaign has launched a new ad contrasting her economic proposals with Trump’s agenda. The ad features Harris’ plans for federal price gouging legislation and action against "corporate speculators" in the housing market, while contrasting with Trump’s push for corporate tax cuts. This ad is part of a broad television and digital campaign running through Election Day.
