Alex Morgan, the iconic women’s soccer star, two-time World Cup champion, and Olympic gold medalist, has announced her retirement from professional soccer.

 Morgan competed in seven World Championships for the USA at the senior level, significantly contributing to the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning teams and the 2012 Olympic gold medal squad. She also played a key role in leading the USA to victory at the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

**CHICAGO (Sept. 5, 2024) –** Alex Morgan, celebrated as one of the greatest goal scorers and most influential players in U.S. Women’s National Team history, has announced her retirement from professional soccer. Renowned for her scoring prowess and global appeal, Morgan is stepping away from the sport as she prepares to welcome her second child.


Morgan will play her final professional match on Sunday, Sept. 8, when the San Diego Wave face the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif.


Reflecting on her career, Morgan, who joined the USWNT in late 2009, said, “Growing up with this team was more than just playing soccer. It was about the friendships, the shared respect, the drive for women’s sports investment, and the many successes on and off the field. I’m honored to have worn the crest for over 15 years. The lessons I’ve learned are a testament to my teammates and our fans. I’m immensely proud of where this team is headed and will forever be a USWNT fan. My ambition for success was always strong, but the rewards I’ve received have exceeded my expectations.”


At 35, Morgan concludes a remarkable 15-year career distinguished by numerous accolades and contributions. She leaves a legacy of 123 international goals, ranking fifth all-time, and 53 assists, which places her ninth in USWNT history. Morgan’s record in matches she played in is an impressive 177 wins, 15 losses, and 32 draws. Notably, in the 86 matches where she scored, the team remained undefeated, with 76 wins, no losses, and 10 draws.


Morgan’s career also includes significant achievements such as leading the USA to FIFA Women’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019, scoring crucial goals in both tournaments. Her celebrated “sipping tea” celebration in the 2019 World Cup semifinal and her five-goal game against Thailand set remarkable records. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in the 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning team, including scoring the game-winning goal in the semifinal against Canada.


Morgan’s influence extended beyond her on-field accomplishments. She was named U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year twice, was a six-time FIFA FIFPRO World XI selection, and was a frequent contender for FIFA Women’s Player of the Year. She also helped the USA secure the 2024 Paris Olympics spot by scoring a decisive goal in the Concacaf W Championship final.


Her club career began with the Portland Thorns, where she won the inaugural NWSL title, and she later excelled with the Orlando Pride and San Diego Wave, capturing the NWSL Golden Boot in 2022. Morgan’s stint with Olympique Lyon and Tottenham Hotspur further showcased her versatility and impact.
